Book Study on Michael Fullan’s “Coherence”

Registration deadline has passed

Superintendents and other central office leaders have a unique opportunity through CEC to participate in a book study around Michael Fullan and Joanne Quinn’s “Coherence: The Right Drivers in Action for Schools, Districts, and Systems.”

John Hattie had this to say about the book: “Coherence is a book that demands action – it moves from the narrative of fixing one teacher at a time to asking about the coherence of the system. Fullan and Quinn create an important narrative about direction, working together, deepening learning and securing accountability. The book sparkles with examples of coherence in action, it makes no excuses for employing the wrong levers of change. This is the blueprint for a new vocabulary of education action; it shows where we need to go next, and is another example of Fullan at the top of his game.”

In these complex times in education, clear solutions are needed. “Coherence” provides the insights and tools to drive effective leadership and this book study will provide the opportunity to dig deeply into those solutions and learn from other system leaders dealing with the same educational challenges.

The book study will include three sessions.

Session 1 (Nov. 8): Defining coherence and focusing direction to build collective purpose.

Session 2 (March 8): Cultivating collaborative cultures while clarifying individual and team roles, and deepening learning to accelerate improvement and foster innovation.

Session 3 (May 10): Securing accountability from the inside out and leading for coherence.

In addition to the book study, this opportunity will bring together central office leaders from many districts and time will be provided to learn from one another through networking. At each of the sessions, the group also will network around a strategic management system to make sure districts are living their strategic plan. In addition, the group will discuss what other districts are doing to make sure they have a high quality return on investment of the strategic plan.

The cost is just $250 for all three sessions. If a superintendent or central office administrator would like to attend just one or two sessions, the cost is $100 per session.

Participants should purchase their own copy of the book, which is readily available, including on Amazon.
